Westbury Leigh Primary School, Wiltshire

Play times are happier and healthier at Westbury Leigh Primary School thanks to new equipment installed in their outdoor space.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

At Westbury Leigh Primary School we believe that happy children learn more and an exciting new playground creates happy children. We wanted to develop an outdoor space that would make children excited about getting outside and active and would help them develop essential skills. Creating an environment that is both fun and educational is key for a good academic balance.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We have carried out two playground developments at Westbury Leigh with Playforce before and we have always been extremely impressed with their service. Their experience allows them to make quick and insightful decisions unique to each school and they know exactly how to make learning part of the fun. We’ve decided we’re not going to stop just yet and have a fourth development planned soon.

ncorporating more exercise into the school day has benefited both the children’s health and attitudes.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

Our space is being used with a particular focus on our recently renewed Healthy School Status. We have installed equipment that encourages physical activity and invites children to exercise in a fun and interesting way. Playforce helped us select a variety of equipment that would test the children’s different muscles and skills and give them a challenge.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Incorporating more exercise into the school day has benefited both the children’s health and attitudes. They are much more enthusiastic about classroom activities after lunch break and the increased adrenaline flows has certainly led to happier, healthier pupils.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

When carrying out a playground development it doesn’t have to be all done at once. We have broken our plans down into four phases and this allows us to design each section in relation to the results from the last phase. Begin with the basics and then add more specialist equipment depending on your pupils needs and desires.
