Why did you want to develop your playground?

At The Avenue Primary School we pride ourselves in our environmental eco-zone and we wanted to make it bigger and better. We had been told that more chalk pits would encourage more Kidney Vetch and, in turn, that would attract the Small Blue Butterfly. We decided to incorporate these possibilities into the extension of our playground.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

As soon as we told the team at Playforce our ideas they were as excited about the project as we were. They were able to design the plans to include all of our requirements and suggested some great ways to keep the space eco-friendly. It was refreshing to work alongside a team so enthusiastic about the development.

The children have become even more interested in the environment around them and the new outdoor space has given them the chance to learn, play and get creative.

How are we using the space to deliver outdoor learning & educational play?

Within our developed environmental eco-zone we installed a new stage and ampitheatre seating so that the children can present their finding, participate in group outdoor lessons, or simply encourage their dramatic talents. We have also installed a higher ‘Hit and Miss’ fence to make the area more private for us and our neighbours.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The children have become even more interested in the environment around them and the new outdoor space has given them the chance to learn, play and get creative. The natural boardwalk pathways have encouraged the pupils to explore all of our eco-zone and they are working together to make the most of the space.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Get the children, staff and parents involved in the planning stage of your development. The team at Playforce helped us include as many of our ideas as possible, it’s important to make sure that those who will be using the playground get a say in how it will look.
