Tatworth Primary School, Somerset

Headteacher, Mr David Knight, describes how working with Playforce has allowed them to transform a small, inflexible area of the school into an attractive and enhanced learning space for the Reception children.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

The overall aim of our new development was to create a covered area that could be used in all different kinds of weather to deliver the Early Years Curriculum for the Reception class. We wanted this design to promote more opportunities for outdoor play in a safe and ‘all weather’ environment for this age group.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We had worked with Playforce before, and we were happy for them to come back to us for another project. We have always been pleased with them; this time, as before, they offered the products and solutions we asked for within a timeframe that suited us.

The area we wanted to use was a small courtyard, which offered little in terms of space and flexibility, but this was just another challenge to overcome. This was achieved with a combination of careful planning, organization and communication between the school and our Playforce consultant.

The results have been welcomed warmly from both parents and the children.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

It is important to create the perfect balance of work and play, especially for the younger primary ages. Now, thanks to the recently installed structure, this is something that the Reception years will be able to put into practice on a daily basis.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The results have been welcomed warmly from both parents and the children. We have managed to include a variety of equipment, including some Musical Equipment, Sand and Water Play Basins and even a planting area complete with Fun Grow Greenhouse Planter – just enough to keep the children busy!

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

We have had to adapt the space – it’s not totally ideal but by working with Playforce we have been able to develop it in the best way we can and maximize the limited space available. The courtyard is now an enhanced, attractive and usable area of which we are very proud!
