Sutton Day Nursery, Surrey

The staff at Sutton Day Nursery wanted to develop an outdoor space that was tailored to suit the needs of their present and prospective Early Years children. They tell us how creative and imaginative play has benefited the nursery.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

With a growing intake at the nursery we wanted to ensure that we have readily available access to outdoor play for all of our present children and prospective ones. We wanted to have a playground that would set as apart from other nurseries nearby. Our attendees are very young so we wanted to ensure that the equipment within the playground would be suitable and beneficial.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We wanted equipment that would really benefit our young children and Playforce could offer us a playground completely tailored to Early Years development. We were impressed with the number of options we could choose from and the team was very knowledgeable about the ways in which each item could benefit every child at the nursery. We feel as though we have a truly unique playground and that it has been created just for us.

The new playground equipment has encouraged the children to play more imaginatively in their natural surroundings.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

We can let the children explore their surroundings with the reassurance that they are safe and protected. The equipment is designed to inspire creative and active play and it’s fascinating to watch them begin to understand and manipulate the different activities. The Hump Back Hill is particularly popular. The children love the tactile bridge and crawling through the tunnel.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The new playground equipment has encouraged the children to play more imaginatively in their natural surroundings. They are learning new skills by crawling and climbing as well as building relationships with each other by coordinating the equipment together. The developments that they are making in the playground are reflected in the classroom, we’ve seen an improvement in creative and social skills.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Choosing equipment that is tailored for Early Years ensures that your children are gaining the best possible benefits from the playground. An outdoor space that stimulates all of the senses and encourages children to approach new challenges in a creative way will help develop a range of skills and attitudes.
