Simon Marks Jewish Primary School, London

Simon Marks Jewish Primary School wanted to create a natural escape in their school grounds. They tell us how their new playground equipment has given pupils the chance to explore woodlands and jungles.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

In busy London we wanted to provide our pupils with a natural outdoor space where they could enjoy creative and imaginative play. We wanted to develop our playground for the children to escape to and enjoy the benefits of their natural surroundings. We also hoped to create an environment in which they could take part in active play on a regular basis, encouraging them to exercise in a fun and innovative way.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

We were looking for equipment that would stimulate our pupils but also have a natural look. The Woodland Towers that Playforce offer were exactly what we needed. They look and feel natural and give the children the opportunity to interact with the environment. The team at Playforce worked hard to ensure we had the perfect combination for our school grounds and that it was designed to benefit the pupils in the best possible way.

Some of our less confident pupils are now rising stars, they have been able to conquer the equipment in their own time and the older children are more than happy to help out.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

Our Play Lawn is a great space for outdoor play and outdoor learning. We can take aspects of our lessons to the playground, whether it’s story telling or creating interactive examples and experiments. The Woodland Tower has been really popular with the children. They love to challenge themselves and each other on the equipment and the variety allows them to develop their skills at their own pace.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Some of our less confident pupils are now rising stars, they have been able to conquer the equipment in their own time and the older children are more than happy to help out. Having the option to spend more time outdoors has made them inspired and creative. It’s fantastic to hear how they’ve been heading outside and reducing their screen time, out of choice, away from school too.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Any school grounds can have a natural feel with the right designs. The children at our school feel as though they are exploring the jungle or woodlands when they start playing on the new equipment. It’s the children that have the incredible imaginations, we just need to give them a little helping hand to get started.
