Millfield Primary School, Cambridgeshire

The staff and children at Millfield Primary School were thrilled with their new Playforce playground, which provides challenging, active play for a range of ages.  Headteacher Deborah Hannaford talked to us about her experience and why she decided to use us for this project.

Why did you want to develop your playground?
At Millfield Primary it was important that were were able to respond to the ever changing needs of our children.  With the current focus on active, healthy living we wanted to extend our play area to be able to deliver a greater variety of activity for a wider age range of children.  It’s important to us that all our children can be challenged by the play equipment on offer and are able enjoy outdoor play as well as learning from their experiences outdoors.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?
I've worked with Playforce before and we have always had excellent service, and we felt they provided us with good value for money.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?
We have a number of pieces of equipment from Playforce’s active range.  Our children particularly love the Freestanding Balance Beam, Burma Bridge, Rubber Step Posts and Trapeze Swing with Balancing Rope.  We also included a Wooden Musical Train and a specially designed EYFS Over & Under Challenge, so that the smaller children have something specially for them.  The Early Years children in particular have benefited from some great opportunities for physical development.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?
The biggest benefit for us is that the children are getting involved in meaningful outside play, using the equipment to challenge themselves.  This contributes to them leading a healthy, active life.
