Laburnum Lower School, Bedforshire

The children at Laburnum Lower School are enjoying their ‘fantastic’ new playground whilst testing their physical and creative skills.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to introduce something to the school that would develop the pupils’ physical and creative skills. Creating an outdoor learning environment that was safe, secure and inspiriting was the perfect way to combine educational play with the great outdoors.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce was able to provide us with equipment designed specifically for children in the Early Years Foundations Stage of their education. This meant that we could install a playground that the nursery and reception classes could use confidently. The team at Playforce listened to all of our needs and ideas and designed a playground that fitted our requirements perfectly.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The Playforce workforce installed our playground equipment around established trees and ensured that alterations were made for disabled access. This means that we can use our space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play to all of our pupils. We are incorporating the new equipment into the school routine and encouraging the children to get outside and active as much as possible.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The new outdoor learning environment has had a huge impact on the children at Laburnum Lower School. They have been creating their own games and magical worlds and we have seen them be more imaginative than they have ever been before. Some of the quieter pupils have gained great confidence and the physical challenges are extremely beneficial for their well-beings.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

The only slight problem we have at Larburnum Lower School is that the older children are not allowed to use it and we’re already talking to Playforce to design something for them. Wherever possible design a playground that children of all ages can come together to use.
