The Early Years pupils at Hargate Primary School have the opportunity to develop their physical skills and have fun in their new playground.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to create a secure, caring, inclusive and friendly environment where everyone feels happy and safe. At Hargate Primary School we pride ourselves on being sensitive to the needs of every child and we decided that it was important to enhance the opportunities for the Early Years’ physical development.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

Our outdoor learning environment is being used to give the children a safe yet exciting space to develop in. It is the perfect complement to their indoor learning and we ensure that there is a good balance throughout the academic day. We have divided the playground so that the pupils have somewhere to go whether they want some quiet reading time or to make as much noise as possible.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Introducing more physical activities into the school day has lead to happier, healthier children.

Can you share any best practice insights you’ve gained?

Getting the balance between fun and safety can be difficult, it’s important to make sure you create an environment where children can take a few risks. Don’t let red tape ruin the pupils’ fun and invest in high quality equipment that will last long into your school’s future.
