Hardwick Primary School, Derbyshire

Hardwick Primary School in Derby were lacking a space where all of their children could benefit from outdoor play and learning. They wanted to develop a safe environment where the students would be encouraged to be imaginative and interactive. They tell us how their new playground has helped get children moving, reduce bullying and has encouraged more fun outdoors!

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We wanted to develop our playground into a safe and inviting environment that would engage and encourage imaginative, interactive play. We wanted to make the playground suitable and available for all ages across our school so that every child can enjoy outdoor play and learning.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

The team at Playforce understood our vision and listened to all of our ideas so that they were able to bring our children and staff dreams into reality

The children enjoy outdoor play much more and it has been fantastic to see their motor skills developing as they face new challenges climbing the Pirate Ship or the Climbing Wall.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

The playground is now a space that can be used by all of our children throughout the school day. The children are now able to take part in daily outdoor play that excites them and motivates them, they are no longer getting bored during their free time.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

The new playground is a much safer space so we have seen fewer accidents during play time. The children enjoy outdoor play much more and it has been fantastic to see their motor skills developing as they face new challenges climbing the Pirate Ship or the Climbing Wall. We are also delighted to see that the new outdoor space has led to less bullying in the playground, the children are playing together and making friends as they use the space together.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Don’t try and overfill playgrounds. Encourage children and the community to look at what is on offer. They create their games and they know what they will interact with, so involve them in the decision making process to avoid buying a piece of equipment that never gets used.
