Hadrian Park Primary School, Tyne & Wear

Hadrian Park Primary School can now learn and play in the great outdoors.
The new playground at Hadrian Park Primary School has provided the staff and pupils with an innovative way to combine outdoor learning with educational play.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

In North Tyneside, we have high expectations of our children and are committed to improving their educational achievements. We wanted to provide the children with a range of new equipment that would enhance their outdoor learning and encourage them to enjoy educational play.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

Playforce is a specialist when it comes to developing school grounds and the team members that we spoke to were as enthusiastic about encouraging outdoor learning as us. It was refreshing to work alongside a team that put our children’s health and safety first but also wanted to ensure that the pupils have some fun.

Taking some of our learning outside has given the children a much greater variety in their academic day. In turn this has helped stimulate their motivation and encourage them to be more imaginative.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

We’ve used our new outdoor space in a variety of ways to encourage learning and play. The Storyteller Chair has been used by staff and pupils to recite everything from ghostly tales to imaginative poetry. The Humpback Bridge and Tunnel is always in use and the children love to run around, inventing new games together.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Taking some of our learning outside has given the children a much greater variety in their academic day. In turn this has helped stimulate their motivation and encourage them to be more imaginative. The pupils are more willing to work together when problem-solving and they look forward to getting outdoors and active.

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

Think about how the outdoor space can be used for both learning and play. Ensure that you include equipment within your design that is educational but also add some that is just for fun. The two go hand in hand.
