Bedenham Primary School, in Gosport, wanted to be able to take learning and play outdoors. They contacted Playforce with a request for an outdoor classroom. Head of School, Mrs Caroline Wood, talked to us about their latest project.

Why did you want to develop your playground?

We’re really lucky with our outdoor space. We have a fantastic forest-type environment outdoors with lots of trees and grass. It offers wonderful opportunities for taking learning outside but sometimes the weather stops us - sometimes because it’s too hot and sometimes it’s too wet. We thought an outdoor classroom would mean we wouldn’t be quite so at the weather’s mercy!

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

How aren’t we using it?! Now our shelter is installed its become an extension of our existing school building, rather than a stand-alone outdoor item. We use if for art and creativity sessions, as well as storytime and sports day. We’re even using it for parents meetings!

Why did you use Playforce?

We worked with Playforce before when you installed our adventure area and fitness trail. We knew that they were quick and professional, as well as being good value for money and easy to deal with. We weren’t disappointed. Everything went to plan and finished early. There was very little impact on the school and the children were able to get outside and enjoy the new shelter really quickly. We were thrilled!

What are the biggest benefits you’ve seen for your children?

It’s fairly early days but we are already seeing a difference in how the children are using the outdoor space and how keen they are to take previously ‘indoors’ activities outside. For example it’s become a popular place to eat lunch and, within the tables and seats a whole class can eat together in there.
