Why did you want to develop your playground?

When I started as headteacher at Ainslie Wood Primary School in September 2009, the only fixed outdoor playground equipment the school had was in the Nursery. Having nowhere to play freely was causing behavioural issues in the playground, particularly at lunchtime, and this was something we wanted to address. Developing a playground with Playforce was the perfect way to get the children involved in making the outdoor space their own.

What were the key elements that made Playforce stand out from other providers?

I have used Playforce for playground development before and I have always been happy with the designs, the time scale and the quality of the work completed. The designers were really good at listening to our specific requirements and ensured that the bespoke designs would fit our areas.

How are you using the space to deliver outdoor learning and educational play?

At Ainslie Wood we have ensured that the designs cater for the different spaces and the different abilities of the children. All of the children in the school have a space where they can play freely and take part in a variety of outdoor learning activities. We wanted all ages to be able to play together or separately and have the suitable equipment readily available.

What are the biggest benefits you have seen for the children?

Can you share any practice insights you have gained?

It’s really important to meet with the designers and share all of the ideas that the children have put forward. Think about the long-term view and ensure that the budget restraints don’t limit the designs.
