Last week was Children’s Book Week and we wrote about it yesterday – and we’re still excited. How did you celebrate this fantastic celebration of reading for pleasure? Book Trust, the largest reading charity in the UK and organiser of the week, had some great resources like posters, lesson resources and competitions.

The Book Trust Best Book Guide 2015 is a brilliant guide to the best books of the past year with reviews grouped into five different age categories from early years to young adults. You can see which books Book Trust is enjoying this month here.

All kinds of organisations got involved in the week like authors and publishers, bookshops and resource providers, schools, libraries and families. Just check out #ChildrensBookWeek and look out for book giveaways, competitions, new children’s book cover designs and more – many of which are still running now.

We’re celebrating the week throughout July by offering some great discounts on outdoor literacy resources at Playforce Shop. Why not find a shady spot and move your book corner outdoors for the day? There’s nothing nicer on a warm summer’s day at school or nursery than taking your favourite books outside for some quiet reading time. Get comfy on blankets, cushions, beanbags or grass and listen or read as your favourite book characters come to life.

Taking literacy outside is a great way to encourage a love of reading and there are lots of ways to use Playforce resources for outdoor learning. We have a wide range of high-quality, long-lasting furniture, outdoor classrooms and shelters and fun dens for all-weather literacy activities.

Our imaginative play, role play and discovery resources also work really well as prompts or creative resources to support literacy activities. Here are just a few book-related activities you might enjoy: • Bring historical stories and fairy tales to life with these Freestanding Castle Panels, available with additional Barbican, Ramparts, Drawbridge and Pinnacle for extra authenticity;

  • Young pirates, sailors, mermaids and fishermen will really enjoy this superb timber ship – the perfect base for stories set on or around the sea. Aha me hearties!
  • This hard-wearing outdoor Train Set is a great place to tell stories about travel, journeys and train rides. All aboard!
  • Our natural Hazel den range is perfect for small group literacy work or guided reading – available as a Castle, House, Tipi or Tunnel.

Of course you don’t need to wait for Children’s Book Week to take literacy outdoors. Every day is a great day to take reading, writing and storytelling activities outside so why not visit Playforce Shop today and take a look at our fantastic outdoor learning and play resources. Alternatively, order our latest catalogue on 01225 792660 – it’s a great read!
